20-Year-Old Charged In Multiple Violent Crimes In Westchester, Police Say

A 20-year-old man faces numerous charges for four violent incidents in Westchester, including a stabbing that happened down the street from an elementary school, police said.

The arrest happened on Thursday, May 4, when police received a report of a man threatening a victim with a knife in Mount Vernon in the area of South 5th Avenue and West 3rd Street around 7:45 a.m., according to Mount Vernon Police. 

When officers arrived at the scene, they found Mount Vernon resident Reynard Smith III, age 20, armed with a large kitchen knife and took him to police headquarters for further investigation. 

Just after 8 a.m., Smith was identified as the suspect who had been involved in the reported threatening incident. 

Police also determined that he was the suspect in several other knife-related incidents, including the attempted robbery of 44-year-old Derek Fox of Yonkers in the area of 36 West 5th St. that happened down the street from Cecil H. Parker Elementary School on Tuesday, May 2 around 12:30 p.m. 

Fox was taken to Jacobi Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries following the stabbing and is expected to make a full recovery. 

In total, Smith was charged in those two incidents as well as two more that happened on Wednesday, April 26, and Monday, May 1. 

Smith, who already has two prior arrests for robbery, was charged with the following: 

  • Three counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon;
  • Two counts of first-degree attempted assault;
  • Two counts of first-degree attempted robbery;
  • Two counts of second-degree attempted robbery;
  • Second-degree assault; 
  • Fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon; 
  • Two counts of second-degree menacing.

He was arraigned in Mount Vernon City Court and remanded to the Westchester County Department of Corrections, police said.
